My name is Renee More and I have been marketing for compounding pharmacies for over 10 years. I know what you are going through because when I started out I had some of the same concerns.
Some of you may not know this, but I am a chemist. I used to work as a nuclear chemist for nuclear pharmacy. Unfortunately, the company was in financial trouble and we were laid off. That night I had to give a speech at Toastmasters and although I didn’t win, I was offered a job as a marketer for a compounding pharmacy. I had no idea what that meant but not knowing something never stopped me before!
What I did know was that marketing was not part of the curriculum in the chemistry program so I needed to study. I went to training and seminars to learn about compounding. I absorbed everything I could get my hands on. I listened to other pharmacists as they talked about what they did to market their pharmacy. They sounded so clinical and knowledgeable. I was in awe. I wasn’t (and still am not) a pharmacist. I didn’t think I could talk clinically as they did with the doctor because they would realize quickly that I had no idea what I was talking about.
Then one evening I had a date and on that date the guy asked me a lot of questions and I did the same to him. We spent that date getting to know each other. When he talked about something I knew nothing about, I would say,”tell me more”. Then I had an A-HA moment! What if I tried this technique when I met with the doctors?
The next week I tried it on a veterinarian. Since I have never owned a pet, I didn’t know anything about what a vet really did. (sad huh?) I was forced to ask questions and do you know what? I left with compounded prescriptions. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, so I tried it in few more veterinarian offices. And each time it worked wonderfully!

She asks you to wait and see if the doctor can meet with you. Thirty minutes later she leans out the window and says, “Oh Dr. Jones is really busy. He said to leave your card and he’ll call you if he’s interested.” UGH!

You go to the doctor’s office armed with formulas. You set out your lunch and wait. A few nurses and the office manager strolls in. They grab a sandwich and sit down. You probably don’t talk to them much but they tell you the doctor is running a little late and will be right in. Thirty minutes later the doctor shows up, grabs a sandwich and says , “So who are you?” You begin to talk about your store and compounding.The doctor nods her head, says “hmm that sounds great”, then says “We appreciate the lunch. I have to get back to my patients but please leave some material with my receptionist and I’ll take a look at it.” You leave feeling like that was a good meeting. NO IT WASN’T. You didn’t get a prescription. You got brushed off. Let me teach you how to stop that from happening.
